Governments urged to address "irregular migration"

People wade out to smugglers' boats for voyage across the Gulf of Aden

Governments have been urged to work together to protect refugees from boat smugglers.

The call has come from the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) following the death of nine people in a boat accident off the coast of Western Java in Indonesia on Tuesday.

UNHCR says the boat was carrying passengers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran on their way to Australia when it capsized.

Andrej Mahecic is from UNHCR.

"The incident underlines once again the desperate steps people are willing to take in the search for protection and better future. It also adds urgency to UNHCR calls to the international community to cooperate more closely in addressing irregular migration and providing protection and solutions to refugees thus averting the need for individuals to undertake such perilous journeys by boat."
