Fallen staff honoured at the UN

Ban Ki-moon at a memorial service to honour UN personnel who lost their lives while serving the Organization

The challenges of ensuring staff security have grown more complex, according to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. Ban was speaking at a memorial service in New York on Monday to honour UN personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

One hundred and ninety-seven men and women have died in service since March last year, including in attacks in Afghanistan and Nigeria.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the service was an occasion for the entire United Nations family to remember the lives and contributions of fallen colleagues.

Beng Poblete-Enriquez has compiled excerpts of speeches by the Secretary-General and Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, President of the 66th General Assembly, to background music performed by Joshua Roman and the UN Singers.
