Alarming rise in mercenary activities calls for attention

A group of UN experts are warning about the alarming resurgence in the use of mercenaries, as well as the expansion of private military and security companies globally.

The group is calling for the elimination of the use of mercenaries, and for international regulation of outsourcing security services.

In Côte d'Ivoire and Libya, mercenaries were reportedly responsible for gross human rights violations.

Meanwhile in Iraq, contractors for military and security companies have also been accused of committing abuses, Faiza Patel, who heads the group, told Jocelyne Sambira.
