7 dead after two earthquakes hit Turkey

Homes destroyed by earthquake in Turkey

Seven people, including an aid worker, are dead, after two powerful earthquakes hit eastern Turkey on Wednesday night.

More than 25 buildings, including two hotels, collapsed in the magnitude-5.7 quake that struck Van, according to the local authorities.

Rescue efforts lasted all night. Workers managed to pull out some 28 people, some of whom were Turkish journalists covering the aftermath of the first quake that struck that region last month.

The UN Relief Agency or OCHA Elisabeth Byrs says the uncertainty of further quakes and the harsh winter conditions are worsening living conditions for Van's inhabitants.

"Of course the people who are living in these cities of tents which have been erected by the authorities…they are winterized tents but still you are traumatized, you have lost relatives and its very cold and snowy and with these new tremors – these new two earthquakes – people are on the edge and very nervous."
