Three peacekeepers of the joint African Union – United Nations mission in Darfur (UNAMID) have been killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in North Darfur.

According to UNAMID, this brings the number of its peacekeepers killed in hostile action to 33 since the beginning of the mission in January 2008.

UNAMID spokesman Kemal Saiki says the peacekeepers were on a routine patrol in Zam Zam camp for internally displaced people on Monday evening when they were fired on.

"The patrol returned fire. In the exchange, three of our peacekeepers, two armed soldiers and one unarmed policeman were killed as a result of this hostile action. We also had, unfortunately six peacekeepers wounded, three of them quite seriously but none of them in life-threatening condition."
