Tanzania’s population growth rate is 2.9%, an average increase of 1.3 million people each year.

In 2012, Tanzania plans to undertake a national census which is estimated to cost $76 million.

As part of the preparations, a week long pilot census is currently taking place in select regions and districts around the country.

The United Nations Population Fund-UNFPA has been working closely with the Government of Tanzania to ensure the exercise proceeds smoothly.

Stella Vuzo of the UN Information Centre in Dar es Salaam discussed the upcoming census with the UNFPA Representative to Tanzania, Dr. Julitta Onabanjo.
