Security Council 'strongly condemns' violence in Yemen

Security Council

The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the violent crackdown of pro-democracy protestors by Yemeni authorities.

The 15-member Security Council passed a Resolution which supports a Gulf Cooperation Council's plan that calls for President Saleh to transfer power to his deputy in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

Several people have been killed this week alone in clashes with Yemeni security forces.

Protests have been ongoing since January this year, with demonstrators demanding an end to President Saleh’s three-decade long rule.
