Respect for human rights of older persons urged

International Day of Older Persons

Governments around the world are been urged to adopt measures to ensure that older people enjoy their rights, including their right to healthcare.

The call has come from, Anand Grover, the United Nations independent expert on the right to health on the International Day of Older Persons on Saturday.

Charles Appel reports.

The independent expert on the right to health says that the rights of older people are often considered to be a marginal area in human rights.

Anand Grover says that as people live longer, millions of older persons suffer daily from prejudice, stigmatization, discrimination, and lack of access to appropriate health care.

He's calling for more resources to provide health care to older persons and a greater focus on treatment for long term and chronic pain.

Mr Grover says older people must be allowed to have a say in how their health care services are being provided.

Charles Appel, United Nations.
