The situation in Yemen is becoming catastrophic, according to Jamal Benomer, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Yemen.

A political deadlock in Yemen has led to a worsening of the economic and humanitarian situation, exacerbating the nine month old crisis.

Meanwhile, fighting continues between forces loyal to the president and those opposed to his rule.

The UN envoy says the sooner Yemeni people agree on a transition, the better for the country.

"Yemen is facing many challenges with the violence that is escalating throughout the country with the economic collapse, with the collapse of the state itself, with the humanitarian consequences that are being felt throughout Yemen in the north and south. The situation is becoming very catastrophic and Yemeni are coping with this situation and this cannot continue forever."

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the situation in Yemen is of deep concern to the international community.  Mr Ban also urged President Saleh to take decisive political reforms and to fully protect human rights.
