Washing hands with soap is being promoted as an effective, simple and affordable way to prevent disease.

Millions of people around the world are expected to take part in events on Global Handwashing Day on Saturday , to highlight the importance of washing, particularly after using the toilet or before handling food.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says soap is not in short supply, but it's used for tasks such as laundry or bathing, and rarely for handwashing.

Here's Marixie Mercado, Spokesperson for UNICEF:

“UNICEF estimates that diarrhoea kills 1.1 million children a year, and that pneumonia-related illnesses take another 1.2 million child lives. That simple act of handwashing with soap can cut diarrhoea related deaths by as much as a half and respiratory related illnesses by as much as a quarter."
