Human Rights Council members come under Syrian attack

Faysal Mekdad, Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister

A report reviewing the human rights situation in Syria has been adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council – but not without Syria accusing some council members of politicizing the review.

The Universal Periodic Review of Syria is part of a continual examination of the human rights performance of all UN member countries.

The UN High commissioner for Human Rights last Thursday said over 2,900 people have been killed in Syria since the beginning of pro-democracy protests this year.

Faysal Mekdad, Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister, welcomed the review, but said the process hadn't worked as it should.

"We regret the fact that a handful of countries tried to divert the debate from its natural, logical course and their attempt to politicize some of the aspects, a politicization which we reject. These countries showed double standards and flagrant selectivity which hamper the important activities of this council."
