FAO helping Kenyan farmers to harvest rainwater

Kenyan farmers are terracing their fields to prevent topsoil from being washed away with the rains.

Farmers in Kenya's east are bracing themselves for the rainy season.

More than 5,000 farming households are getting help from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in conserving rain water and in preventing soils from being washed away.

In return for their work, farmers receive vouchers that can be redeemed for food and building materials.

Dan Rugabira, FAO Representative in Kenya, says efforts like this can help farmers to get back on their feet quickly.

Most people in these parts survive by growing cereal crops in small plots and by raising livestock.
