elections in Zambia

The people of Zambia have been congratulated by the United Nations Secretary-General for holding peaceful and orderly elections.

Zambians went to the polls on 20 September to elect a president and members of parliament.

Daniel Dickinson reports.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia for its role in managing what he described as "a credible and transparent process."

He congratulated Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front on his election and welcomed what he called the "smooth and dignified" hand-over of power on Friday.

He said he was pleased that Zambians have shown Africa and the world that change can be brought about peacefully when democracy is allowed to flourish.
