World Bank encourages women to "Think Equal"

women asking for equality

Women make up the majority of unpaid workers worldwide. Only 15% of landowners and one in five lawmakers globally are women. More girls are out of school than boys. Violence against women is still widespread. With these facts in mind, the World Bank says it's time to increase women's economic opportunity and their voice in decision making. A World Bank open forum, called "Think Equal" hosted in September looked at what changes need to be made in the world for women and men to be equal. In the following feature, Georges Collinet of the World Bank specifically focuses on the women of Nepal and what needs to be done to increase their voices in decision-making.

To see how the needs of women are being affected by this crisis, the head of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, recently visited Dadaab refugee camp. Gerry Adams asked him what conditions stood out most for him.

Peace "possible" according to UN Messenger of Peace

Ban Ki-moon with Jane Goodall

World renowned chimpanzee expert and UN Messenger of Peace, Jane Goodall, attended the annual Peace Bell Ceremony at the United Nations as General Assembly preparations began.  Speaking ahead of the event, she said people around the world should believe that peace is possible. She became interested in issues surrounding peace after realising that her work with chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania meant that local people were struggling to make a living.  Ms Goodall has since started her own youth programme, Roots and Shoots.  Daniel Dickinson asked her why she became involved.
