The United Nations has confirmed that an investigation has been launched following an incident involving Uruguayan UN peacekeepers in Haiti.

The UN's mission in the Caribbean island, MINUSTAH, said it was aware of allegations against the peacekeepers, which is being investigated by the Uruguayan defence ministry.

MINUSTAH has what it calls a zero tolerance towards sexual exploitation and abuse.

The mission's spokesperson is Eliane Nabaa

"If the allegations are true, perpetrators must be brought to justice and in this regard, we welcome the firm commitment and action taken by the Defence Minister of Uruguay."
