The joint Africa Union and United Nations mission in Darfur (UNAMID)  has been praised for the progress it has made in improving security in the troubled Sudanese region.

Darfur has suffered almost a decade of instability following uprisings by rebel groups and retaliation by the Sudanese government.

UNAMID was established in 2007 with a mandate to protect civilians and to provide security for humanitarian operations.

The African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Ramtane Lamamra, visited UNAMID headquarters in El Fasher [7th Sep] 2011.

Paul Omalla asked him about the purpose of his visit.
