UN peacekeepers to be deported from Haiti
Five Uruguayan soldiers serving with MINUSTAH, the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti are under arrest following allegations that they sexually abused an 18-year old boy.
The incident came to light after a video appeared on the internet.
The UN mission on the Caribbean island has 9000 troops on the ground including a Uruguayan contingent.
The MINUSTAH force commander is Major General Luiz Ramos.
“The soldiers – they accept their guilt. It’s unacceptable behaviour, of course. I’d like to mention that as Force Commander. It’s not exactly what you expect from peacekeepers. Also the Mininster of Defense of Uruguay took the decision to repatriate the five soldiers, and remove also the commander.” (Duration: 19")
