UN membership for Palestine on Security Council agenda

Riyad Mansour

An application from the State of Palestine for full membership of the United Nations has been formally discussed by the Security Council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the application to the Secretary-General of the United Nations last Friday.

The Palestinian observer at the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, says the Security Council took two decisions during its formal meeting on Wednesday.

"One, it decided to include the application of the State of Palestine for admission on the agenda of the Security Council. That was adopted unanimously. And secondly, it dealt with the proposal suggested by the President of the Security Council to send the application to the appropriate committee to begin the process of deliberating on our application. And that also was adopted unanimously."

(Duration: 27")

Mr. Mansour said that 15 ambassadors comprising the committee will meet on Friday to start the process of discussing the Palestinian application.

The United States has said that it will use its veto in the Security Council to block the application.
