A senior United Nations official is meeting the new Libyan authorities to discuss how to assist Libya in the weeks and months ahead.

Ian Martin, the United Nations Special Advisor for Post-conflict Planning, is on a five day visit to Libya for talks with members of the National Transitional Council (NTC).

UN Deputy Spokesman, Eduardo Del Buey says that the Special Advisor met the Minister of Interior to discuss the challenges faced by Libyans in the area of public security.

"Martin said he was in Libya to discuss the kind of support wanted from the United Nations — not just today but in the weeks and months ahead. He added that clear priorities had already been given by leaders of the National Transitional Council (NTC) including support for the electoral process, advice and assistance in the area of transitional justice, how to strike a balance between accountability within the law for the most serious human rights violations while seeking national reconciliation."

Duration: 26"

On Wednesday Mr. Martin is scheduled to go to Benghazi to meet NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil and Dr. Ahmed Al-Jehani, Minister of Reconstruction and Stabilisation, before returning to New York.

Fighting continues in Libya where opposition fighters now control large areas of the country and have driven Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi out of the capital, Tripoli.
