UN chief warns climate change is holding back development in Pacific islands

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Mrs. Ban arrive in Tarawa Kiribati

Climate change is posing the most serious threat to the survival of the island of Kiribati and other Pacific nations according to the United Nations Secretary-General.

In a joint statement with the President of Kiribati, Anote Tong, Ban Ki-moon said that climate change was undermining efforts to achieve sustainable development in small Pacific island nations.

Both leaders reaffirmed the need for urgent international action to reduce emissions of the harmful greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.

Mr Ban is currently on a two-day visit to Kiribati.
