Terrorism poses serious threat to peace and security: Nigeria

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of Nigeria

The use of terrorism for political reasons is a serious threat to international peace and security, according to the President of Nigeria.

Addressing the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, President Goodluck Jonathan said that there has been an upsurge of terrorist attacks in parts of Nigeria over the past few months.

The Nigerian leader vowed that his nation was committed to fighting terrorism.

"The increasing use of terror in various regions of the world as a form of political action poses serious threat to international peace and security. We must win the war against terrorism because it infringes on the fundamental rights of all peoples to life and to live in safety. Only recently the United Nations building in Abuja housing several UN agencies was the target of an atrocious terrorist attack which left several dead."
