Syrian President has not kept his promises: Ban Ki-moon

Ban Ki-moon

The President of Syria Bashar al-Assad has not kept his promise to stop using force against peaceful demonstrators, according to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr Ban said the international community needs to speak with one voice on the issue of Syria where popular protests continue to be met with violence.

Speaking on a visit to New Zealand he said he has asked President Assad many times to stop using excessive force against civilians.

Mr. Ban said he has also requested the President to implement the bold political reforms he has promised.

"Unfortunately he has not kept his promises and he has been continuing this violence, killing many people. I think it is necessary for the international community to should speak up in the same voice. Unfortunately we have not been able to take any coordinated way, coherent manner as we have done in Libya and Cote d'Ivoire. That's my message again to the international community."
