Authorities in Syria have been urged by the United Nations human rights office to stop reprisals against activists.

It says that prominent human rights activists inside and outside Syria are being targeted as the authorities continue their brutal crackdown on protestors in the country.

UN human rights spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, says that in one recent case a body of an 18-year old woman, who died in custody after being tortured, was discovered by her family.

"We have received unconfirmed reports that she had been abducted by members of the security forces on 27 July, apparently to pressure her activist brother to turn himself in. We once again urge the Syrian authorities to end their brutal crackdown against peaceful demonstrators, end their acts of reprisal against activists and their families, and allow for an independent and impartial investigation of the situation in Syria."Duration: 23"

Ravina Shamdasani says it is critical for the Security Council to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court.
