Syrian authorities have been urged by the head of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to stop abuse against journalists.

The call comes in the wake of numerous reports of attacks on journalists covering the popular uprising in the country.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

“The head of UNESCO, Irina Bokova has expressed her concern about reports that Syrian caricaturist Ali Ferzat was cruelly beaten by armed men on the 25th of August.

There is also concern for freelance journalist Hanadi Zahlout who has been in jail since her arrest 25 July.

The Director-General of UNESCO stresses that "torture and detention will never convince the people of Syria that might is right."

Ms. Bokova is urging Syrian authorities to respect freedom of expression and listen to what their critics have to say.
