President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan

The international community has been urged to help the newly independent Republic of South Sudan to get out of what has been described as 'the abyss of poverty and deprivation.'

The call has come from the country's President Salva Kiir Mayardit during his address to the General Assembly on Friday.

President Kiir said his country has been ravaged by over five decades of conflict.

"Our march out of the abyss of poverty and deprivation into the realm of progress and prosperity is going to be a long one and that is why we need you to partner with us on this difficult journey."
