Security Council to defer Palestinian membership application to committee

Nawaf Salam

The Security Council is expected to meet on a formal basis on Wednesday to consider the application of the State of Palestine for full membership of the United Nations.

Members of the Council have met in private on Monday to discuss the application submitted to the United Nations Secretary-General by Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas last week.

Ambassador Nawaf Salam is the President of the Security Council for the month of September.

"The Security Council met this afternoon in consultation and decided to convene in a formal meeting Wednesday at 9:30 to consider the application of the State of Palestine for membership, to defer that to the Standing Committee on Admissions."

(Duration: 20")

The United States has already said that it will use its veto to block the application.

The US supports statehood for the Palestinian people but says that it has to be negotiated with Israel.
