Security Council discusses Palestinian statehood application

Security Council

The formal application by Palestine for full membership of the United Nations is expected to be discussed on Monday by the Security Council.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the application for statehood to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday last week.

Charles Appel reports

The discussions will be held in private.

Nine votes are needed, including all the five permanent members of the 15-member Security Council in order for the Council to recommend admission to the 193-member General Assembly.

The permanent members are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The United States has already said it will use its veto to block the application.

The US supports statehood for the Palestinian people, but says it has to be negotiated with Israel.
