Respecting the dignity of people with disabilities enhances the human family, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations said on Wednesday.

Asha Rose Migiro, was opening a forum on disabilities at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Participants include diplomats and members of civil society organizations devoted to the rights of people with disabilities.

The Deputy Secretary-General applauded their work which resulted in the adoption by the General Assembly of a disability rights convention in 2006.

"You galvanized a diverse movement around the universal truth that persons with disabilities must enjoy full human rights and fundamental freedoms. You and I and millions of others know, that when we respect the inherent dignity of persons with disabilities, we enrich our human family. More than 100 States have ratified the Convention — testament to the growing global understanding of how important it is to redress the many challenges facing persons with disabilities."
