Secretary-General receives Palestinian application for UN membership

Mahmoud Abbas submits formal application for UN membership to UN Secretary-General

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has delivered his application to become a UN member state. In his address to the General Assembly,  he’s expected to plead his case. Later in the day, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu will stand in the same spot, where he will tell world leaders that the only way to statehood is through negotiations, not the UN.  Julie Walker reports:

“Negotiations have been going on all week to try and avert what is being seen as an issue that could incite even more tension in the Middle East and harm stalled peace talks.

The US has already said it would veto the measure if it comes up in the Security Council. Instead, they want a two state solution, something the UN is also in favour of.

As for the General Assembly, several Heads of State have already said they are for Palestinian statehood through the UN, but without the Security Council stamp of approval, that statehood would be limited. Also, it would not resolve the key issues facing the Israelis and the Palestinians, namely borders, security, settlements and Jerusalem.

Julie Walker, United Nations.”
