Progress is being made in the global effort to improve health services and prevent the deaths of 16 million women and children. That's according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

World leaders are gathering at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday to discuss targets set under the Every Woman, Every Child initiative.

The initiative launched a year ago by the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon aims to improve health services and cut mortality rates in the world's poorest countries.

Daniel Dickinson asked Yves Bergevin, a maternal health expert at UNFPA, what is new about this particular initiative.
