Palestinian state only achievable through talks: Obama

US President Barack Obama

A Palestinian state is only achievable through dialogue according to the US President, Barack Obama.

On Friday, the Palestinian authorities are expected to formally request that the United Nations recognises Palestine as a UN member state.

Talks between the Palestinians and Israel on border and security issues broke down a year ago.

Speaking to the UN General assembly on Wednesday, President Obama said he still supports the statehood bid.

"One year ago, I stood at this podium and called for an independent Palestine. I believed then – and I believe now – that the Palestinian people deserve a state of their own. But what I also said is that genuine peace can only be realized between Israelis and Palestinians themselves."
