Palestinian Authority applies for full UN membership
The Palestinian National Authority has formally submitted its application to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for full membership of the United Nations.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the General Assembly on Friday that after 63 years of suffering, it is time for the Palestinian people to gain their freedom and independence.
"I would like to inform you that, before delivering this statement, I, in my capacity as President of the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, submitted to H.E. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations an application for the admission of Palestine on the basis of the 4 June 1967 borders, with Al-Kuds Al-Sharif as its capital, as a full member of the United Nations."
President Abbas called on the Secretary-General to transmit the request to the Security Council which he urged to vote in favour of full membership of Palestine.
He also appealed to governments that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to do so.
