No alternative to a political solution in Afghanistan: UN envoy

Staffan de Mistura

There is no alternative to a political solution in Afghanistan, according to the top United Nations envoy in the country, Staffan de Mistura.

Mr. De Mistura briefed the Security Council on Thursday on the situation in the country which is struggling to establish peace in the face of attacks by Taliban insurgents.

He stressed the need for the people of Afghanistan to continue with their efforts despite the assassination last week of Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani who has been working on promoting dialogue among Afghans.

"There is no alternative to a political solution and there has been a window of opportunity for talks to begin, albeit very narrow and clearly fragile and we need to pursue it. Peace is a process not an event, a process in which in order to be sustainable and deliver lasting results must be broad-based, including Afghans of all kinds, including civil society."

Afghanistan is being assisted by the International Security Assistance Force led by NATO to build its security forces while battling the Taliban insurgents.
