New Libya faces challenges with "positive features": UN envoy

Ian Martin, head of UN Support Mission in Libya

The new Libya faces enormous challenges but is destined to succeed as it rebuilds after the conflict to overthrow Colonel Muammar Qadhafi.

That's the assessment given on Thursday by Ian Martin, the head of the recently established United Nations Support Mission in Libya.

Mr Martin said that although fighting is still going on for full control of the country, the National Transitional Council has been recognized by the international community.

He said Libya has now entered a new phase.

"The new Libya faces enormous challenges but it faces them with many positive features. The commitment of the National Transitional Council itself to building a democratic accountable state respecting human rights and the rule of law and bringing about national reconciliation is a highly positive feature and the fact that the international community, whatever its past divisions over Libya has now come together in fully support of the National Transitional Council."
