More than security measures needed to combat terrorism: Ban Ki-moon

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Beating terrorism requires more than security or law enforcement measures according to the United Nations Secretary-General.

Speaking at a meeting of senior government officials in New York on Monday, Ban Ki-moon said that the threat of terrorism remains very present.

Mr Ban said the adoption of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in 2006 was a move in the right direction.

"The strategy recognizes that terrorism cannot be combated only through security-related or law enforcement means. Effective counter-terrorism requires a combination of social, educational, economic and political tools that target those factors that make the terrorist option appear attractive."
