• Tributes have been paid to the Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai, who has died of cancer at the age of 71. Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga called her "the pillar of the nation". She was the first African woman to receive the honour for her work to protect the environment.

Displaced Kenyans "in need of urgent help"

• Authorities in Kenya are being urged to do more to help displaced people in the country. About 600,000 people were displaced by the post-election violence in Kenya in 2008. Chaloka Beyani, an independent UN expert on the issue, says urgent help is needed in Kenya.

• The global eradication of rinderpest this year is expected to improve livelihoods for families in Africa. The disease caused famines across the world as hundreds of millions of cattle and other animals died. Professor Margaret Kamar of Kenya says it has taken many years and concerted efforts to eradicate rinderpest.
