Libya urges Security Council to unfreeze assets

Mahmoud Jibril

The Libyan authorities have requested the Security Council to unfreeze assets which were blocked by a UN resolution in March this year.

The resolution came in response to the violent suppression of the popular uprising in the country by forces loyal to former Libyan leader, Muammar Qadhafi.

It is estimated that as much as $110 billion Libyan assets are frozen in banks around the world.

Mahmoud Jibril of the National Transitional Council spoke in the Security Council on Monday.

"We raised some remarks in the Security Council regarding our request to unfreeze our money according to resolution 1973 of the Security Council. We made the specific request that the objective circumstances based on which that resolution was taken are not there anymore. So there is no need for that resolution to be applicable anymore."
