The Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan continues to recover from the destruction caused by nuclear tests during the era of the Soviet Union.

Over 400 nuclear weapons tests were conducted on the site which resulted in the release of radio-active material in the atmosphere.

Twenty years ago, Kazakhstan closed the site and is at the forefront of the global campaign to ban nuclear tests and weapons.

Yermek Kosherbayev, the Deputy Governor of the Eastern Region where the site is situated tells Derrick Mbatha about these efforts.
