Israel says Palestinians should make peace before statehood

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel

Palestinians have been urged to make peace with Israel before they are granted statehood.

The call came from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his address to the General Assembly on Friday.

Earlier, the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas had handed a letter to the UN Secretary-General applying to become a UN member state.

Prime Minister Netanyahu told the General Assembly that there are weapons including thousands of missiles in Gaza which are posing a threat to Israel's security.

"All these potential cracks in Israel's security have to be sealed in a peace agreement before a Palestinian State is declared not afterwards because if you leave it afterwards they won't be sealed and these problems will explode in our face and explode the peace. The Palestinians should first make peace with Israel and then get their state."
