Israel does not want Palestinian statehood through the UN

Palestinian chair

Israel does not want statehood for the Palestinians to go through the United Nations, instead the country wants to negotiate directly.

This is one of the biggest issues on the agenda for the 66th United Nations General Assembly.

Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address the General Assembly on Friday. That is the same day President Abbas plans to hand in an application Friday seeking UN statehood recognition.

Julie Walker spoke with Nabil Shaath, a senior Palestinian negotiator and advisor to President Abbas, following a speech by US President Barrack Obama in which he said he would not support Palestinian statehood through the UN.

Julie Walker also spoke to Israeli spokesman Ofir Gendelman about the situation.

Duration:  4’46″

[Please note that the audio for Ofir Gendelman follows that of  Nabil Shaath's.]
