Iranian President causes walk-out in General Assembly

Diplomats from the United States have staged a walk-out from the UN General Assembly in protest at a speech by the Iranian President. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the US had used the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York 10 years ago as a pretext to attack both Iraq and Afghanistan.

$357 million needed to help five million Pakistan flood victims

Over $350 million dollars is needed to provide what's been described as life-saving assistance to more than five million people affected by floods in Pakistan. The appeal has been launched by the United Nations humanitarian office, OCHA, which says Sindh, the worst affected area, is still recovering from last year's floods. Patrick Maigua asked OCHA's Elizabeth Byrs in Geneva about the current situation in Pakistan.

World Bank helps improve services for mothers in Lao People's Democratic Republic

Laos, a mountainous, landlocked country in Southeast Asia, has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Southeast Asia. One mother dies for every 170 births. Dr Phetdara Chanthala, a World Bank health specialist and former surgeon based in Laos, says the high maternal death rates are due in part to a shortage of medical facilities in rural areas and poor transportation. He told Gerry Adams the World Bank is working to improve access to health services for the poor.
