Iran phases out ozone-depleting asthma treatments

world's total consumption of ozone depleting substances (ODS)

Iran has become the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to phase out medical inhalers which contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.

The inhalers, used to treat asthma and other pulmonary ailments, contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are known to attack the ozone layer.

The phasing out of the inhalers by the Iranian government has been backed by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), as well as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The depletion of the ozone layer can lead to a number of health problems in humans including skin cancer.
