Hundreds of Libyans arrested by forces loyal to former leader Colonel Muammar Qadhafi are reported to be missing.

Fighting continues in Libya as the National Transitional Council pushes to extend its control in a small number of areas where Qadhafi loyalists continue to resist.

On Monday, Judge Philippe Kirsch, a member of the International Commission of Inquiry on Libya reported to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on alleged human rights violations by pro-Qadhafi forces.

"It is alleged that those forces arbitrarily arrested and detained hundreds of Libyans at checkpoints in and around Tripoli and other localities. The whereabouts of many of those detained is unknown. It is reported also that at least 19 detainees have died of suffocation in metal containers during June 2011."
