General Assembly meets at 'especially crucial time": Ban Ki-moon

The world is facing an increasingly complex set of challenges, from democratic changes sweeping North Africa and the Middle East to the global economic crisis and climate change.

That's what United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told students at Auckland University in New Zealand on Monday.

Mr. Ban said that this year's session of the United Nations General Assembly, which brings together world leaders from around the world in mid-September, is taking place at "an especially crucial time".

"Look at the geopolitical landscape, sweeping democratic movements in North Africa and across the Middle East, global economic turmoil coupled with tectonic shifts in global power that blur our distinctions: east versus west, north versus south, rich versus poor, accelerating climate change, a rising incidence of mega-disasters and humanitarian crises".
