Floods response scaled up in Pakistan

Aid agencies are responding to an appeal by the government of Pakistan to provide assistance to over 5.3 million people affected by floods. UN agencies have been scaling up their response after heavy monsoon rains led to severe flooding and the displacement of thousands of people. The south of the country has been badly affected and is still recovering from floods a year ago which made 20 million people homeless. UN Radio's Patrick Maigua sent this report from Geneva.

 Amphetamines major "security risk" in Asia

An increase in the manufacture of amphetamine drugs like ecstasy and crystal meth in East Asia is posing a major security risk in the region according to the UN's drugs agency. A United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime or UNODC report on Amphetamine-type stimulants of ATS, reveals that in South-East Asia alone the number of illegal pills seized rose from 32 million in 2008 to 133 million last year. ATS drugs have become the second most used illegal drug in the world after cannabis. Daniel Dickinson asked UNODC's Gary Lewis who's based in Bangkok, Thailand, about the growth in ATS drugs.

Climate change tests Bhutan Gross National Happiness

Climate change is raising its ugly head and testing what the south Asian country of Bhutan calls Gross National Happiness. The country has been making remarkable economic and human development gains which are factors that contribute to this notion of happiness. Now, the melting glaciers and changing weather patterns are threatening this happiness. Beng Poblete-Enriquez spoke to Ajay Chhibber, Assistant-Secretary-General of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to find out more about Bhutan's Gross National Happiness and this threat of climate change.
