Economies in Sub-Saharan Africa grow rapidly in 2011

UNCTAD Development Report

• Economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is expecting to grow rapidly in 2011. That's according to the UN development and trade agency (UNCTAD).  An economist at UNCTAD says African countries should use revenue from commodities exports to diversity their production and develop agriculture.

UN offers to assist in Libya's disarmament

• Fighting is continuing in Libya, where rebels are tightening their control over the country. The whereabouts of the former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Qadhafi are uncertain. The UN has sent a Senior Advisor to the country to discuss the future of Libya without Colonel Qadhafi.

• Libyans are said to be "euphoric" about the change that is happening in their country. Opposition fighters have driven forces loyal to Muammar Qadhafi out of the capital, Tripoli. A spokesman for the UN senior adviser says Libyans seek assistance from the United Nations in organizing elections, training the police and providing transitional justice.
