Assassination of former Afghan President condemned by UN chief

The assassination of the former President of Afghanistan has been strongly condemned by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani was Chairman of the High Peace Council set up by the Afghan president last year to work on a framework for peace with Taliban insurgents.

According to reports, Professor Rabbani died in a suicide bomb attack at his house in Kabul on Tuesday as he and a senior Afghan official were holding talks with two insurgents.

The official was injured in the bomb attack which also wounded and killed other civilians.

The UN Secretary-General reiterated that the United Nations will continue to support Afghanistan and its people to attain peace and stability.
