Action is needed to prevent the crisis in the Horn of Africa from becoming an even worse famine, according to Valerie Amos, the head of the United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA).

Ms. Amos spoke at an event on the margins of the UN General Assembly on Saturday focusing on saving children in Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia.

She said the drought is having a major impact on the economic growth and sustainability of countries in the region but applauded action by two of those countries to avert a catastrophe.

"And it's clear that preventive action taken by Kenya and Ethiopia has been very important in preventing those countries where we do have millions of people affected by drought has meant that those countries have not slipped into famine conditions. We are dealing with a combination of factors. We are dealing with conflict, poverty, the impact of climate change (and) population growth which means we have to put even greater focus on prevention."
