Officials in Asia and the Pacific region have been urged by the United Nations to ensure that millions of poor people have access to modern energy services.

The call came at a three-day meeting of policy makers from over 15 Asia-Pacific governments and energy experts from around the world.

The meeting, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand, ended on Thursday.

The UN says that lack of access to modern energy services is keeping tens of millions of people in poverty and poor health across the Asia and Pacific region.

It calls on governments in the region to come up with policies that make clean and efficient energy services available to poor people, the majority of whom are women.
