$18 million appeal for Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia

Planning to stay? Refugees from Blue Nile State cross into western Ethiopia with all they need for a long exile.

An appeal for $18.3 million has been launched by UN agencies to help refugees fleeing violence in Sudan's Blue Nile state.

Up to 35,000 refugees have fled into western Ethiopia following an increase in fighting.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, says it expects the number of people fleeing to increase as hostilities continue in Blue Nile State.

Refugees told UNHCR staff they had fled fighting around Damazine, the state capital and had walked for up to a week to reach safety.
